While preparing for such tasks from IELTS online exercises, you can claim that the press deserves to be given full freedom.  This claim should be followed by reasons for making that statement.  You could say that only through such freedom the vigilant journalists are able to bring the wrongdoing of many leaders to the public attention.  In this way the citizens get informed and only an informed citizen can demand his rights or else the wrongdoer will continue with his actions.  The press makes everyone accountable for his actions and hence must be given the freedom to expose any negative activities done by anyone in society, regardless of his high position in society, and without fear of being reprimanded by the law.

You can also choose a middle path by striking a balance and saying that though ample freedom must be given to the press, no one should abuse this freedom.  This freedom does not give the newspapers the right to malign and slander anyone they don’t like.  The press must behave in a responsible manner and just because they have the right to report, it does not mean that they have the right to mudslinging or character assassination in order to achieve cheap publicity. They must know where to draw the line between exposing a situation and attacking an individual in a vicious and personal way.  The reporting must be unbiased and neutral in tone.

After answering this aspect while practicing IELTS online exercises for essays, the second aspect of the question regarding the effect it could have on information given to the public, should be addressed.  You could mention that if the press is not given freedom, then this could have a very detrimental effect on democracy as cunning politicians and leading members of society who are rich and powerful will get away with anything without fear of being brought down.  This would make a mockery of democracy in the long run.  After thus addressing both aspects of the given question, you could conclude with your initial stand that for the above reasons, you feel that a certain amount of freedom is a must for newspapers, in order to make a success of any democracy.

The Secret Syllabus for IELTS

In order to prepare for IELTS thoroughly, you need to go through the IELTS material which is based on the four sections of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening sections of the test. With regard to the writing tasks for the General Version, there are two tasks which are to be covered in one hour.  The task 2 requires the student to write a minimum of 250 words and is usually a discussion of a subject of general interest.  You are normally asked to present your view or opinion on a subject and justify it with reasons and examples, provide a solution to a problem, or make a comparison of different views regarding an issue.

There are four areas of consideration while awarding marks for this part of the test.  You will be marked from 1 to 9 for the task response, lexical resource, cohesion and coherence as well as accuracy and grammatical range.  The average of these four will be taken as the marks for this section.  The content of the essay is important while going through the IELTS material, and the student should have addressed it fully.  You have to provide support and back-up for your opinions and you can even relate your own personal experiences in order to support your view.

Lexical resource means that you must use the correct vocabulary and the right words in the right time and place.  Your language should be wide ranging with good word choices but also natural-sounding.  For instance, if you say – the death of my mother ‘effected’ me very badly – this would be the wrong choice of the word as what you meant was ‘affected’ not ‘effected’.

Grammatical errors are also considered for penalizing and hence one must use the proper grammatical structure while preparing with the IELTS material.  But effective communication is more important than grammar accuracy.

Separating your essay into specific paragraphs is very important and it contributes a lot in clarity.  There is no point in presenting a sea of information all put together into one huge essay.  You have to separate the relevant points in separate paragraphs and also indent them giving space between each new idea.  This shows organization and also makes it easier for the examiner to understand your views. An introduction, two paragraphs for the body and a concluding paragraph is ideal.

While going through the IELTS material, the student must remember that Task 2 of the General writing section contributes more to the band score and hence requires more time allotted to it.  You must spend approximately 40 minutes on this task.  Sometimes, there are many aspects to the question.  You must take care to answer them all and these too can be separated into different paragraphs.  Your answer should have a persuasive tone to it and point towards a particular conclusion which answers all aspects of the situation, problem or argument presented.

The Ultimate Preparation for IELTS

Millions of students all over the world are undergoing IELTS preparation.  This is the standard test taken for the purpose of international education or employment.  More than 6000 institutions all over the world in 135 countries recognize this test.  There is a growing demand for the IELTS preparation services as well as the courses.  It is managed and owned by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, IDP: IELTS Australia and the British Council.

IELTS tests the student in four sections of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. In the first task, the student must present facts from a graph, chart etcetera.  Sometimes, a diagram of a machine or a physical or chemical process is graphically presented and by seeing it, the student is asked to explain how it works.  All relevant and important details should be clearly presented in the explanation.  However, minor details and points can be left out.  The style of writing should not be very formal but can be academic. During the IELTS preparation,  It is important to note that the answers should not be less than the required 150 words, but it can exceed the minimum limit by a few more words.

During IELTS preparation, the student who is appearing for the General Training Module also has two writing tasks to complete within sixty minutes.  The first task consists of a situation to which the student is asked to respond.  This could be in the form of writing a letter asking for some information or just explaining a situation.  The second task consists of an essay which is written based on a point of view or argument that has been given.

Did You Know This About The IELTS General Writing Section?

In the IELTS General Writing, there are two tasks one of which is to be allotted twenty minutes and the other forty minutes.  The first task is a letter and the second is an essay task which is to be written in about 250 words.  Take care that you don’t write less than 250 words, as this will be penalized.  However, you may write more than 250 words up to a maximum of 300.  The second task carries more weightage and also takes longer and is in the form of a description of an opinion, argument or some social problem.

It is important that your essay has structure in the form of an introduction, body and a conclusion.  This means that your essay should have at least four paragraphs in it.  If the given essay topic is in the form of an argument then you need to explain both sides of the argument and then state clearly which side you are on in the introduction itself.  If the question is in the form of an opinion then you need to state another opposing opinion and also say which of the opinions you agree with and also give reasons and examples as to why you support it.

A third type of question in the IELTS general writing test, will deal with a problem and here you need to explain the problem, discuss and analyze all aspects of it and then provide your own solution to with based on some relevant reasoning and examples. The main idea of the argument must be presented in the first few introductory lines.  Since task two of the IELTS General writing carries more marks than the task 1, it would be a good idea to write the second task first and the first one next.  But do make sure that you write the answer in the allotted area in the answer sheet.  You can jot down your ideas on the question sheet.

The best way of practicing for task 2 of the IELTS General Writing is to read newspaper editorials and magazine articles, so that you are aware of the current topics in the world.  You will be able to develop ideas clearly in this manner.  In the introduction, you should clearly make your stand regarding the topic and let the examiner know whether you agree or disagree with the topic.  The next paragraph must deal with examples to support your stand.  You can then give the contrary viewpoint and also state you don’t agree with it by giving relevant examples.  Finally, you should conclude restating your stand.  If there is time, do make sure that you check your essay for spelling mistakes and any other grammatical construction and so on.

The assessment for the task 2 of the IELTS general writing is done based on whether the response is well related to the focus of the question.  Next, coherence and cohesion is noted. Finally the grammar, vocabulary and sentence construction is also accorded marks.

One of the problems the student faces in completing IELTS general writing is the time factor.  The student finds it very difficult to finish the paper in the allotted time, hence it is very important to practice in order to improve you speed.  You may need to use some important expressions which are generally useful for all essays.  You can use – It may indeed by true to say that (fill in with whatever is given in the statement) but (then present your views on the subject).  Another way of differing in your opinion would be to say – It may indeed by the case that (write the given statement in your own words) but this subject requires further analyses.  Such introductions can be practiced to improve your writing skills for the IELTS general writing.

Attention: What is the IELTS Test REALLY About?

In the writing section of the IELTS test, the student has to deal with two tasks for both the Academic and the General Writing Versions.  However, the tasks type is different in both the versions.  With respect to the Academic module, the first task deals with the description of a graph, a pie chart, a diagram, or a process. The student is required to describe it in about 150 words.  This should be allotted a time of twenty minutes.

In Task 2 of the Academic Writing for IELTS, the student is presented with a point of view of an argument or with a problem.  You need to write about 250 words on this topic and have forty minutes time.  Before attempting this task, the candidate should read the given task carefully and plan out a full and relevant response.  For instance, if the topic deals with a particular aspect of a disease, then the response should deal with that particular aspect too and should not deal with it in a general way.  The answer should definitely be of 250 words and not less than that, or else it will be penalized.  However, it can exceed the number by about a few words.

If you write too long an answer, there may not time enough for checking and making appropriate corrections.  Task 2 of the Academic writing in IELTS contributes double the amount of band score when compared to Task 1.  Therefore the student must definitely make it a point to attempt this task, or else a good band score is not possible.

Full, grammatical and connected sentences must be used in this task and not bullets or note forms.  When writing a response in the IELTS test, you must take care not to repeat the question directly but to reframe it if necessary.  The argument must be clear and well-organized in content and the student must supply examples or evidence in order to support any ideas or opinion,  Besides, the language and vocabulary used must be correct.

There is no right or wrong answer for this task in the IELTS test, as it is more of an opinion.  You have to present an argument or case along with some examples or evidence to support your argument.  The student must use his own ideas and knowledge and write from his experience for this task. There is no compulsion that you have to agree with the argument.  Sometimes an argument or topic could have two sides to it, and in this case you could try making a list of pros and cons or just points for and against the topic.  The topic should also be analyzed fully.  Be careful that you don’t deal with only a limited aspect of the topic.

Good and clear writing for the IELTS test involves simplicity of language.  Make a rough note of the key ideas you are planning to use for supporting the argument.  Under each key idea you may need to write down some supporting points.  Then you can think of your own experiences with relation to the topic and try to incorporate those examples if they are relevant.

The introduction for the Task 2 of the Academic writing is very important as it gives the examiner a first impression regarding your writing skills. The kind of discussion topics that are presented in the test for this task are quite broad and all students from diverse backgrounds will be able to write on it.  You should explain what you have understood from the given task in the introduction.  The student must never copy the task word for word as the examiner will ignore it and you will not be awarded any points for this part.  The above points need to be kept in mind while undertaking Part 2 of the IELTS writing for Academic module.

Even More Important Aspects of IELTS exam

The important aspect of the IELTS exam is to assess the student’s ability to understand and communicate in the English language in both academic and social contexts.  The test aims at testing the ability to read and understand written academic or training language.  It also tests the student’s ability to write assignments in a style that is suited for university studies.  The other important aspect that the IELTS exam assesses is the capability of understanding the spoken language in both formal and informal conversational styles. The student is, additionally, tested on his ability to speak on general and in formal or informal situations.

In the writing section of the IELTS exam, for instance, the student is tested on his ability to analyze opinions and views.  The student must be able to make a clear distinction between a fact, an opinion and a claim.  Sometimes, they present you with a number of views or claims and ask you to write an essay on the argument given, where you can agree or disagree with the given statement.

There are many ways of supporting an argument which is the task presented in the Task 2 of the writing section in the IELTS exam. You can support your opinion with an example or with an anecdote from your own life, or even with another argumentative statement.  Sometimes you may need to present an opposing argument or, in other words, refute an argument.  For instance, the given statement might claim that politicians should be paid higher salaries.  To refute this claim, you could just say that this is just a job like any other, and hence they don’t need any preferential treatment with respect to the salary.

In another instance, the given argument could conclude that the internet is a very valuable resource for children.  If you wanted to refute the above claim, then you could say that this conclusion is open to differing opinions because there is a lot of uncensored material on the net.  An argument which concludes that gambling is a menace in many ways and should be legally banned , could be refuted with another one saying that it also generates a lot of revenue for governments in the form of taxes.

Sometimes it is important to present the information given in the task 1 of the IELTS exam, which may be in the form of a graph, a diagram, process or a pie chart.  Here, it is not possible to write a separate sentence for each of the items shown in the graph, as sometimes a great amount of detail may be present in the given graph.  In this case, the student must be able to present the information in the form of complex sentences, which reduces the number of sentences but still gives the description by using a lesser number of words.

For instance, if you have the following information to represent in the IELTS exam – The graph is about the number of students in the US, the number of students in higher education has risen; the rise has taken place over the last five years.  The three sentences can be combined as – In the given graph regarding student numbers in the US, the same has risen over the last five years.  Another example of putting two or more simple sentences and combining them to form a shorter complex one would be – Students were asked what they expect to ear when they start to work; 40 percent of them expect to earn about $20,000; 2 percent expect to earn about $50,000.   The information can be presented in short complex sentence in this manner – When students were asked about the expected income, 40 percent of them mentioned the sum of $20,000 while 2 percent quoted $50,000.

The student can, thus, practice many such exercises in order to put a large amount of data into a small space of 150 words.

Must-See Key Features of IELTS Exam!

The IELTS exam is conducted for students who seek to enter into an English-speaking university, school or college as well as for people who want to provide this score for immigration purposes into an English-speaking country.  By thoroughly practicing the various aspects of reading, speaking, writing and listening sections that are tested, one can definitely get a band score of 6.  Enhancement of language skills is the ultimate objective of the student aspiring to get a high band score in the exam.

For instance, suppose you take a graph which shows the different months on the x-axis and the amount of sales of hamburgers on the y-axis, in the first task of the Academic Writing.  The first thing to consider would be to see whether the line graph is constantly rising, constantly falling or is a combination of rise and fall with any steady phase between.  The next thing to consider in this task of the IELTS exam would be the tense you would use in the graph.  Since it is talking about the sales that have already taken place, it would be better to present it in the past tense.  The first sentence would probably be describing the general subject of the graph.  You could say that the given graph shows the trends in the sale of hamburgers throughout the months in a particular year.

Next you could make four sentences regarding the various trends that you see regarding the sales of the hamburgers.  You can try using words such as stable, fewer, rise, peak, drop, popular, sudden fall, sudden rise and so on to show the trends in the different months.  Some students might consider explaining this particular graph with the help of twelve sentences explaining the sale for every month.  But this would be highly repetitive and is not a good way of representing the information.

It is better to describe trends in this kind of task of the IELTS exam, with the use of words given above rather than repeat the sentences.  One should be able to spot patterns and then explain any event. The examiner would like to see whether you are able to identify important aspects of the graph and represent them.

In the second writing task for both Academic and General Training of the IELTS exam, an opinion is required where the student has to give support or go against a view or argument presented in the given question.  This support can be in the form of examples and relevant evidence from your own personal experience.

For instance, if the question is discussing the impact of information technology on people and claims that some have incorporated it as a way of life while others know very little about it.  They then claim that this could lead to a polarization in society which might ultimately lead to serious social problems.  The first thing to do when you read such an argument is to realize whether a particular opinion is given in the statement.  Next, you would have to decide whether you agree with the given opinion, disagree with it or partially agree with it.  This has to be expressed very clearly in your answer.  There is no correct or wrong answer to the above question.  You are free to agree or disagree with the question given in this task.  These tips should be kept in mind while tackling the writing aspect of the IELTS exam.

IELTS preparation requires a comprehensive study of the four aspects of reading, writing, speaking and listening.  The two modules consist of the General Training and the Academic Training module.  The writing task differs for both the modules.

The time available for both the writing tasks is just one hour and hence you will not have a lot of time for preparing the answer.  The examiner, however, is looking for a clear structure in the response.  One must keep a simple style while describing the chart or the graph.  It would be better if the student thinks for a few minutes regarding the introduction of the task for both the modules for IELTS preparation.

While interpreting graphs and tables or any other graphic information in the Academic module, you must write about facts and trends.  Another important part of the presentation is that one must compare and contrast the information that is given.  In order to practice for this task, you can find some graphs or charts and study the given data carefully.  Make a note of all the information that is given on both the axes of the graph or the labels.  Then select one or two aspects that you feel are important and then try describing the trends that the graph shows with respect to the important aspects.

Some of the questions might deal with the description of a process.  In order to practice for this, the IELTS preparation requires that you try to describe a simple every day process such as doing up a tie in as few words as possible.

As an important part of IELTS preparation, when you want to link up your ideas it would be nice to use link words such as first, second and so on.  When you want to add an extra point you could use words like moreover, furthermore, in addition and so on.  For presenting a contrasting idea words like on the other hand, conversely, in contrast, in comparison, yet, nevertheless, nonetheless, likewise, however, whereas, in spite of and so on could be used to add flair to your sentence.

When you describe charts or graphs or diagrams, it is significant to remember for the IELTS preparation that your ability to describe factual information clearly and accurately is being tested.  You must keep in mind that factual information is different from an opinion.  Factual information is very objective and there can be no two opinions on it.

The factual information in a pie chart or a graph can be presented in different ways.  If it shows fifty out of twenty students enjoy a particular activity, you could mention the exact numbers.  Alternatively, you could make a statement saying that half or fifty percent of the students enjoy the activity.  Another way of presenting this kind of fact would be by using general terms like most, a few, some, many, very few, hardly any and so on.

For IELTS preparation, when the student is required to explain line graphs for the Academic module he can use words  like rise, increase, peak and so on if the line shows an increase over the time.  For a falling line graph he can use words such as fall, drop, decline or a dip.  If there is a sudden fall in the trend then words like sharp or dramatic fall, considerable fall or rise can be used.  If the line graph shows a steady trend then words such as a gradual rise, a steady rise or fall can be used.  Other terms to use for expressing different positions in a graph would be by stating that the item has reached a peak, reached a plateau, remained stable, hit the lowest point, remained the same and so on.  These tips for expressing the various trends should be kept in mind during IELTS preparation.

It is important for a student planning to study in a university or college or a school to be able to write coherently and in a relevant manner.  IELTS Academic writing is aimed at assessing this ability of the student.  You may need to write short essays or reports in the course of your studies.  It is therefore very important that the student learns to express himself clearly and also writes in a variety of styles and organize ideas in a careful manner.  There should also not be a lot of grammatical errors and the sentence formation should be fairly accurate.

Linking words that could be used for showing such concessions in an argument in the IELTS Academic writing task 2, would be – although, despite the fact that, while, admittedly, certainly and so on.  Sometimes it may be necessary to refute an argument forcefully and this can be done by rejecting an argument which you totally do not agree with.  Some of the grammatical structures you can use in this case are – I am unconvinced that, I don’t believe that, It is hard to accept that, there is little evidence to support the , it is unjustifiable to say that and so on.

Good paragraphing is very important and the argument task of the IELTS Academic writing task 2 requires careful planning along with good vocabulary, good spelling and punctuation.  It is also important to be able to build complex sentences as credit is given in the IELTS Academic writing task for such structures.  One can make a complex sentence by combining a number of simple sentences which are well linked together with the appropriate link words.  It is very important that the student shows his ability to control such complex structures but one must not overdo it.

There should be a good balance of both simple and complex sentences and it is not necessary that every sentence is a long one linked with link words.  Sometimes a short and cryptic statement can have a greater impact than a long-winding complex one.  Correct English and spelling along with proper grammar is essential.  The use of vocabulary should be intelligent without being unnatural.

In addition, the student must not get emotional in his argument but remain very practical and neutral in tone while analyzing the argument.  When you look at the argument, pay careful attention to note whether an opinion is already present in it.  You can either agree or disagree with the opinion in the IELTS Academic writing task 2.  There is no necessity of using any technical jargon or expressions as it is expected to be read by a person with no specialist knowledge.  You can add as many relevant examples and illustrations as you want.  The ideas should be expressed clearly and try not to copy any sentences directly from the question itself.

After giving a clear introduction, the student can clearly state which side of the argument he is on.  The conclusion must be of a resounding note which emphasizes your stand that you proposed in the introduction.   The introduction and conclusion must be compact and precise without beating about the bush. Finally, take care not to exceed the word limit of 250 to a very great extent.  The IELTS Academic writing task 2 should not be longer than 300 words and should not be less than 250.  Hence, some time should be set apart for counting the words.
